  • iCloud Lock Check on a Used iPhone: 6 Steps Before You Pay

An iCloud lock check does not take long, and it protects you from paying for an iPhone you cannot use. Apple’s advice is simple: do not buy an iPhone that is still Activation Locked, and ask the seller to erase it in front of you so you can see the Hello setup screen. These are the six steps to follow when you buy a used, Ex-UK or refurbished iPhone in Kenya.

iCloud lock check: 6 steps before you pay

    1. Ask to inspect the exact phone. Hold the unit you will pay for, not a sample. The shop’s seller and listing checks page gives the same advice.
    2. Ask the seller to erase it. On the phone, go to Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Erase All Content and Settings. If it asks for an Apple Account password that is not yours, the previous owner’s account is still linked. Do not pay.
    3. Look for the Hello screen. After the erase, the phone restarts to a Hello screen and asks you to set it up. Apple says a Hello screen means it has been erased. If you see “iPhone Locked to Owner”, the phone is Activation Locked. Do not buy it.
    4. Check for a carrier lock. In Settings, General, About, look for “No SIM restrictions” next to Carrier Lock. That means the iPhone is unlocked.
    5. Check battery health and parts. Open Settings, Battery, Battery Health. In Settings, General, About, check Parts and Service History if it is shown, and look for “Unknown” parts.
    6. Check the serial number and IMEI. Our IMEI check guide shows how, and our guide to spotting a fake iPhone covers clones.

Only pay once all six steps pass. For payment safety, read the M-PESA safety guide on the main site. Apple’s full list is in If you want to buy a preowned iPhone.

What if the phone is locked after you pay?

Apple says Activation Lock is removed by the previous owner, so the person who sold you the phone has to remove it. Apple’s page on Activation Lock explains how it works.

Check the seller’s return rules before you pay. The iPhone Deals return and warranty policy says goods once sold cannot be returned, apart from repair, replace or refund under the warranty terms. That is why you check the phone first, not afterwards.

What you can ask iPhone Deals to show you

The shop lists four condition labels: New, Refurbished, Used and Ex-UK, and says each handset is graded individually and confirmed before you order. Ask to see the exact unit and run steps 2 to 5 above before you pay. The shop is at Kimathi House, 4th Floor, Suite 404, Kimathi Street, Nairobi CBD. Call 0700 555 507 to confirm stock before you travel.

    iCloud lock check FAQs

Is an iCloud lock check the same as an IMEI check?
No. An IMEI or serial number check confirms the identity of the phone. An iCloud lock check confirms the previous owner’s account is gone, so you can set the phone up as yours.

Can a shop remove an iCloud lock?
Apple’s guidance is that the previous owner removes Activation Lock. Do not buy a phone that is still locked and rely on someone promising to fix it later.

What does “iPhone Locked to Owner” mean?
It is the Activation Lock screen. The phone is tied to the previous owner’s Apple Account and you cannot use it until they remove it.

Does a Hello screen mean the phone is safe to buy?
It means the phone has been erased. Apple says to also check the other items: carrier lock, battery health and parts history.

  • iPhone Screen Replacement Cost in Kenya: Repair or Replace?

The iPhone screen replacement cost in Kenya runs from KSh 6,500 for an iPhone 11 to KSh 13,000 for an iPhone 13 on the iPhone Deals repairs page. For the seven models in the table below, that is between 20% and 37% of what the same phone costs to buy at iPhone Deals. If the rest of your phone is healthy, repairing the screen is usually the cheaper route.

Phone prices are the starting prices on the product pages, so a bigger storage size costs more and makes the repair share smaller. The iPhone 12 stands out: its screen repair is the highest share of the phone price in the table.

How do you decide between repairing and replacing?

    Repair the screen if:

Side view of a black iPhone on a blue background
    • the battery, camera and Face ID still work properly
    • the phone is still fast enough for how you use it
    • the repair costs a small share of a comparable phone

Think about replacing the phone if:

    • the battery is weak and also needs replacing
    • the phone has water damage or more than one fault
    • you were already planning to upgrade

If the battery is the other problem, see our iPhone 12 battery replacement cost guide. If the phone will not charge, see the charging port repair guide. For a detailed look at one model, read the iPhone 12 screen replacement guide.

If you decide to replace, the iPhone range at iPhone Deals lists current prices. Phones come with a 6-month warranty on eligible items, but the warranty page says there is no warranty on the screen, so inspect it before you pay.

What to ask before you book a screen repair

    • What kind of replacement screen will be fitted?
    • Does the repair come with its own warranty?
    • How long will the repair take?
    • Will Face ID, True Tone and brightness work after the repair?

The repairs page treats a booking as a request. You select the iPhone model, choose the repair and pick a date, then the team contacts you to confirm the appointment. For comparison, Apple lists its own service options on Apple’s iPhone repair page.

Those are the screen replacement prices on the iPhone Deals repairs page. One cracked screen on an iPhone 12 costs KSh 4,500 more to fix than on an iPhone 11. That is close to the KSh 5,000 you paid extra at the start.

Also note that the warranty page says there is no warranty on the screen. A screen problem on a phone you have just bought is not covered, so inspect the screen before you pay. For more on iPhone 12 repair prices, see our iPhone 12 screen replacement guide.

Who should buy the iPhone 11, and who should buy the iPhone 12?

    Buy the iPhone 11 if:

    • your budget is around KSh 25,000 to KSh 28,500
    • this is your first iPhone or a backup phone
    • you can live without an OLED screen and 5G

    Buy the iPhone 12 if:

    • you want an OLED screen and a newer chip
    • you plan to keep the phone for several years
    • you want to use MagSafe chargers and cases
    • you have 5G coverage in your area

Apple decides how many more iOS versions each model gets, so check Apple’s current compatibility list before you buy either one.

What to check before you pay for either phone

The same checks apply to both models. Run the 8 checks in our guide to buying a used iPhone 11, and check the serial number and IMEI using our iPhone 12 IMEI check guide.

Ask to inspect the exact phone you will pay for. The shop’s own seller and listing checks page gives the same advice.

Devices from iPhone Deals carry a 6-month warranty on network and charging issues, earpiece, microphone, speaker and software malfunctions unrelated to third-party apps. Read the full warranty terms before you buy.

Top 5 Best iPhone Shops in Nairobi CBD (2026 Edition)

If you are looking for the best iPhone shops in Nairobi, this guide compares five shops in the CBD. The best iPhone shop in Nairobi CBD right now is iPhone Deals at Kimathi House, Kimathi Street, Suite 404, for one reason most “best of” lists skip: they let you test the actual phone against its IMEI and warranty terms before you pay, not after.

Right down the same corridor, on the same 4th floor of Kimathi House, Shwari Phones (Suite 409) runs a close second with a wider spread of models and online ordering. Rounding out the top five are iStore Kenya, Salute iWorld, and Phone Place Kenya, three shops worth knowing if a brand-new unit with a manufacturer warranty matters more to you than price.

This list is built for one job: helping you walk away with a genuine iPhone, at a fair price, backed by a warranty someone will actually honor. Every shop below is named because it’s real and checkable, not because it paid for the spot. Where two shops are genuinely close on price, we say so.

    1. iPhone Deals, Kimathi House

Where: 4th Floor, Suite 404, Kimathi House, Kimathi Street, Nairobi CBD. Open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 7pm, Sunday 9am to 6pm.

iPhone Deals sells New, Refurbished, Ex-UK, and Used grade iPhones side by side, with the condition stated upfront on every listing rather than buried in a spec sheet. Every phone comes with a 6-month warranty covering network, charging, earpiece, microphone, speaker, and software faults, plus a 1-month accessory warranty. The warranty does not cover a cracked screen, and sales are final, same terms most Ex-UK dealers in this market work under, so this isn’t a point where iPhone Deals is uniquely generous. Repairs, when something does go wrong, turn around in up to 72 hours.

What actually separates this shop from the rest of the list: you check the phone yourself, IMEI and all, while you’re standing in the shop, before any money changes hands. That single step is the difference between “trust us” and “see for yourself,” and it’s the step most fake-iPhone complaints in Nairobi trace back to skipping. Buyers outside Nairobi order by WhatsApp (0700 555 507) and get the same inspection done on video before dispatch, with delivery nationwide through Wells Fargo or Leta Pelela couriers.

Screen repair pricing is public and specific rather than “call for quote”: iPhone 12 and 12 Pro at Ksh. 11,000, iPhone 12 Pro Max at Ksh. 13,000, with a full price table covering iPhone X through the 17 series on the repair pages.

Honest trade-off: iPhone Deals does not carry brand-new, sealed iPhones, Apple’s own warranty only applies to units Apple itself activated as new, which neither iPhone Deals nor any Ex-UK dealer on this list offers. If a manufacturer warranty specifically is the deciding factor, see iStore Kenya or Salute iWorld below.

    2. Shwari Phones, Kimathi House

    Where: 4th Floor, Suite 409, Kimathi House, Kimathi Street, Nairobi (info@shwariphones.africa, +254 705 820 082).

Yes, Shwari Phones is one door down from iPhone Deals, same building, same floor. That makes this an easy one to check in person: walk the fourth floor and compare both before you decide.

Shwari Phones brands itself “Africa’s Premium Renewed Tech Marketplace” and backs that with real range, its catalogue runs the full iPhone line from a Ksh. 7,490 iPhone 7 up to the iPhone 17 Pro Max at Ksh. 165,000 to 210,000, alongside Samsung, OnePlus, Google Pixel, iPads, and MacBooks. It also runs a trade-in desk (up to Ksh. 45,000 quoted toward a new purchase) and a Lipa Pole Pole installment option, and the whole catalogue is browsable and orderable online, with delivery stated as same-day within Nairobi and 1 to 2 business days elsewhere.

On warranty, the two shops are close to identical. Shwari Phones’ published Return & Warranty Policy (last updated August 2026) gives 6 months against functional defects, excludes accessories, excludes misuse and unauthorized repairs, and commits to a replacement or refund if a warranty repair runs past 72 hours. Sales are final, same as iPhone Deals.

On price, several models track within a few hundred shillings of each other. iPhone Deals’ iPhone 14 128GB is confirmed live at Ksh. 49,000 against Shwari Phones’ listed Ksh. 49,500 starting price for the same model, and the two shops’ iPhone 12 Pro Max pricing matches exactly at Ksh. 55,000 to 58,000. Neither shop has a clear, consistent price edge, so if price alone is your filter, it’s worth checking both listings the week you buy.

What tips it to #2 rather than a tie: everything on Shwari Phones’ site is “starting at,” with the specific grade and condition disclosed only once you open a listing, where iPhone Deals states the condition (New, Refurbished, Ex-UK, Used) on the shop floor before you commit, and lets you watch the IMEI check happen. For a purchase this size, that’s worth the one extra flight of stairs down the same corridor.

    3. iStore Kenya, Bazaar Plaza

Where: Bazaar Plaza, Moi Avenue, Nairobi CBD.

iStore Kenya shows up in Google’s local listings as an Apple Authorised Reseller & Service Provider, and if brand-new, factory-sealed Apple hardware with Apple’s own international warranty is the priority, this is the category of shop to use, not an Ex-UK dealer. The trade-off is the one you’d expect: new-unit pricing, which runs well above any Ex-UK or renewed listing on this page for the same model. If you’ve been comparing Ex-UK iPhone 14 prices around Ksh. 49,000 to 55,000 on this list, expect a new iPhone 14-class device from an authorized reseller to cost meaningfully more, that gap is the price of a factory-new unit and Apple’s own warranty, not a sign the Ex-UK shops are hiding something.

    4. Salute iWorld, multiple locations

Where: Nine stores across Kenya, including Garden City Mall, Westgate, The Junction, Yaya Centre, and JKIA Terminal 1A.

Salute iWorld is another Authorized Apple reseller, with a wider physical footprint than any single-location shop on this list, nine stores rather than one, so it’s worth including for readers outside the CBD specifically. It also runs its own 0% interest installment plan over 90 days.

One thing worth knowing before you go: in July 2026, media reports claimed Salute iWorld’s parent company had been placed under receivership, a claim the company publicly and specifically denied the same month, stating all nine stores remained open and trading normally. We’re not taking a side on a dispute that isn’t ours to settle, just flagging that it was in the news recently so you can factor it in or ask in-store if it matters to you.

    5. Phone Place Kenya, Bazaar Plaza

Where: Bazaar Plaza, Mezzanine 1, Unit 5, Moi Avenue, Nairobi CBD.

Phone Place Kenya sells new smartphones, including current iPhone models, directly off their own listed pricing (an iPhone 16e, for example, listed at Ksh. 75,000 at the time of this research). What earns it a spot here over several other new-stock sellers is the financing: alongside a standard deposit-based Lipa Pole Pole plan (10 to 40 percent interest depending on term, 30 to 120 days, requires payslip/KRA PIN/ID), they also offer a “Save Now, Chukua Later” plan.

That second plan runs at 0% interest, no deposit required, paid down over up to 6 months through their paybill, and it applies to iPhones. If a 0% plan with no deposit at all is what you need and a brand-new unit is non-negotiable, this is the shop on this list built for that.

How to check an iPhone is genuine before you pay

Kenya has seen a real rise in convincing iPhone clones, so this is worth doing regardless of which shop you buy from:

    • Check coverage directly with Apple. Go to Settings > General > About on the phone, find the serial number, and enter it at checkcoverage.apple.com. A real iPhone returns a model and activation status. No result, or a result that doesn’t match what you’re holding, is a hard stop.
    • Look at the build, not just the screen. A genuine Apple logo on the back is metal, not printed, and the SIM tray sits flush with the frame.
    • Open Siri and the App Store directly. Clone units often run a modified Android shell dressed up to look like iOS, so a clone frequently substitutes a voice assistant or app store that isn’t Apple’s.
    • Connect it to a computer. A genuine iPhone is recognized instantly by Finder (or iTunes on older machines). A clone either isn’t recognized at all or shows up as an Android device underneath the skin.
    • Ask for the IMEI check on the spot, at the shop, before you pay, the same step iPhone Deals builds into its sale. If a seller won’t let you do this before money changes hands, that alone is reason to walk.

Our own guide on spotting a fake iPhone and how to run an IMEI check go further into both of these, with screenshots of what a genuine result looks like.

Financing: Lipa Pole Pole and similar plans, shop by shop

“Lipa Pole Pole” isn’t one single product, every shop above that offers it structures it differently, so don’t assume the terms carry over between stores:

Where a cell says “not publicly stated,” that’s deliberate, we didn’t find exact terms published for that shop at the time of writing, and we’d rather tell you to ask in-store than guess at a number that could be wrong by the time you read this.

Bringing a phone into Kenya yourself vs. buying locally

If you’re weighing importing an iPhone yourself against buying from any shop on this list: Kenya has, over the past two years, been rolling out stricter device registration and import-tax rules through KRA, and the exact requirements have shifted more than once in that window. Rather than quote a rule here that may be out of date by the time you read it, the safe move is to check KRA’s current guidance directly before you import, and to remember that none of the above applies when you buy from a shop already operating in Kenya, the import and registration step is the seller’s problem, not yours.

Checklist for buying an iPhone at any shop in Nairobi CBD

Whichever shop you choose, the same checks protect you. Do them before you pay, not after you leave the shop.

    • Ask to inspect the exact phone you will buy, not a sample or a photo.
    • Open Settings, General, About, and check that the model and storage match the listing.
    • Check the serial number and IMEI against the box and the receipt. Our IMEI check guide shows how.
    • Look at Battery Health in Settings, Battery, then test the cameras, speakers, microphone, charging and Face ID.
    • Ask for the warranty terms in writing, including what is not covered. Screens are often excluded.
    • Run an iCloud lock check. The phone should be erased and show the Hello screen. See our iCloud lock check guide.
    • Ask what the shop will do if a fault shows up in the first week, and who you speak to.
    • Pay only after the phone passes, and keep the receipt with the IMEI written on it.

None of these checks takes long. A shop that is happy to let you do them is a better sign than any ranking, and the same advice applies to every shop in this list.

iPhone 12 Pro Max vs iPhone 13 Pro Max: Is the Price Gap Worth It in Kenya?

At iPhone Deals, the iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at KSh 55,000 for 128GB and the iPhone 13 Pro Max starts at KSh 59,000 for 128GB, a gap of KSh 4,000. Move up to 256GB and it’s KSh 58,000 versus KSh 65,000, a gap of KSh 7,000. For that difference you get a 120Hz ProMotion screen, the A15 Bionic chip, a longer-lasting battery and a camera with a true 3x optical zoom instead of 2.5x. Whether that’s worth it depends on what you actually use your phone for, and the honest answer is that for most buyers in Kenya right now, it is.

A note on third-party pricing: a recent Google search for “where to get iPhone 13 Pro Max” surfaced a Nairobi CBD competitor listing the iPhone 12 Pro Max around KSh 57,000 and the iPhone 13 Pro Max around KSh 70,000. That figure comes from a third-party listing, not from iPhone Deals, and has not been independently verified here, so treat it as a reference point rather than a confirmed price.

Every row above is independent of the others on purpose: if you only need the battery figures or only the camera aperture numbers, you can read that one row without the rest of the table.

What actually changed: display, chip, camera, battery

The single biggest everyday difference is the screen. The iPhone 12 Pro Max refreshes at a fixed 60Hz, the same as a basic iPhone. The iPhone 13 Pro Max runs ProMotion, which adjusts the refresh rate up to 120Hz depending on what’s on screen. Scrolling, typing and swiping between apps feel noticeably smoother on the 13 Pro Max once you’ve used it for even a day, and this is the change most people notice immediately after switching.

iphone 12 pro max vs iphone 13 pro max

The A15 Bionic in the iPhone 13 Pro Max is a real step up over the A14, mainly in sustained performance and graphics, which matters more for gaming and video editing than for everyday browsing and messaging. Both chips still handle current iOS versions and everyday apps without strain in 2026, so this difference shows up mainly under heavier workloads, not in basic use.

Camera-wise, the telephoto lens goes from 2.5x optical zoom on the 12 Pro Max to a true 3x on the 13 Pro Max, and the main wide camera gets a larger sensor and a wider f/1.5 aperture, which helps low-light shots. The 13 Pro Max also adds macro photography on the ultra-wide lens and Cinematic mode for shallow depth-of-field video, neither of which the 12 Pro Max has. If photography is a priority, this is where the price gap earns its keep.

Battery life is the other clear win for the newer phone. Apple rates the iPhone 13 Pro Max for up to 28 hours of video playback against 20 hours on the 12 Pro Max, a difference you’ll feel by the second day of moderate use. Part of that comes from a larger 4,352mAh battery, part from the A15’s efficiency, and the trade-off is a slightly heavier, slightly thicker phone.

iphone 12 pro max vs iphone 13 pro max

Is the iPhone 13 Pro Max worth the extra money?

For a KSh 4,000 to KSh 7,000 difference in Kenya, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is worth it for most buyers. ProMotion alone changes how the phone feels to use every day, the battery lasts meaningfully longer, and the camera gains a longer zoom and macro mode that the 12 Pro Max simply doesn’t have. That’s a lot of real, usable improvement for a gap smaller than the cost of a single repair.

The case against upgrading is narrower than it might sound. If you genuinely don’t care about screen smoothness, rarely use the camera beyond basic photos, and charge your phone daily anyway, the 12 Pro Max still does the job and saves you a few thousand shillings. But for anyone who’ll notice a laggy scroll or wants better low-light shots, the smaller gap in 2026 makes the newer phone the easy pick.

Is the iPhone 12 Pro Max still worth buying in 2026?

Yes, with a caveat. The iPhone 12 Pro Max still runs current iOS updates, still has a genuinely good OLED display even without ProMotion, and the A14 Bionic is still fast enough for everyday use in 2026. If your budget is tight and KSh 55,000 is the ceiling, it remains a capable large-screen iPhone with a real triple-camera system and 5G support on Safaricom’s network.

What you’re giving up is mostly comfort and headroom rather than core function: a fixed 60Hz screen, a shorter telephoto reach, no macro mode, and noticeably shorter battery life than the newer model. None of that makes the 12 Pro Max a bad phone, it just means the 13 Pro Max does the same job with fewer compromises for a price difference that’s smaller than many buyers expect.

    Which one should you buy?

If you’re budget-constrained and mainly use your phone for calls, messaging, social media and browsing, the iPhone 12 Pro Max at KSh 55,000 covers all of that comfortably and keeps more money in your pocket. If you take a lot of photos, especially in low light, watch a lot of video, or just want a phone that feels fast and smooth every time you pick it up, the iPhone 13 Pro Max at KSh 59,000 is the better buy for a gap most people won’t miss.

Storage matters here too. If you shoot a lot of photos or video, or you keep a large app and media library, the 256GB option on either phone (KSh 58,000 for the 12 Pro Max, KSh 65,000 for the 13 Pro Max) is worth the extra cost over running out of space within a year.

    Where to buy in Nairobi

iPhone Deals is based at Kimathi House, 4th Floor Suite 404, Kimathi Street, Nairobi CBD, open Monday to Saturday 8am to 7pm and Sunday 9am to 6pm, with both in-store pickup and nationwide delivery via courier. You can reach the shop on 0700 555 507, order through the website, or confirm stock and configuration over WhatsApp before you pay.

To be transparent about the wider Nairobi CBD market: a Google search for “where to get iPhone 13 Pro Max in Nairobi” also surfaces Phone Place Kenya, Mobile Hub and Shawtech KE as CBD phone shops carrying similar stock, along with Badili Kenya and listings on Instagram. None of their specific prices or stock levels for these two models have been independently confirmed here, so compare directly with them before you decide, the figures above are what’s confirmed at iPhone Deals as of this live check.

    Warranty and what’s included

Both the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max at iPhone Deals carry a 6-month warranty covering network, charging, earpiece, microphone and speaker faults, plus software issues, with a 1-month warranty on accessories. The warranty doesn’t cover a cracked screen or physical damage, and returns aren’t accepted once a unit leaves the shop, so it’s worth checking the phone thoroughly in person or confirming condition clearly over WhatsApp before you buy. Turnaround on any warranty repair is typically up to 72 hours.

    FAQs

What is the main difference between the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max? The biggest differences are the screen (60Hz on the 12 Pro Max versus 120Hz ProMotion on the 13 Pro Max), the chip (A14 versus A15 Bionic), battery life (20 hours versus 28 hours of video playback), and the camera’s zoom range (2.5x versus 3x optical).

Is the iPhone 13 Pro Max camera better than the iPhone 12 Pro Max? Yes. The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a larger main sensor, a wider aperture on the wide lens, a longer 3x optical zoom instead of 2.5x, and adds macro photography and Cinematic mode, none of which the iPhone 12 Pro Max has.

How much is the price gap between iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max in Kenya? At iPhone Deals, the gap is KSh 4,000 on the 128GB models (KSh 55,000 versus KSh 59,000) and KSh 7,000 on the 256GB models (KSh 58,000 versus KSh 65,000).

Which iPhone is better, 12 Pro Max or 13 Pro Max? The iPhone 13 Pro Max is better overall thanks to ProMotion, a stronger chip, longer battery life and a better camera. The iPhone 12 Pro Max remains a solid, cheaper option if those specific upgrades don’t matter to you.

Does the iPhone 12 Pro Max support 5G in Kenya? Yes. The international iPhone 12 Pro Max supports 5G band n78, the same band Safaricom’s 5G network runs on, so it connects the same way the iPhone 13 Pro Max does.

Is the iPhone 12 Pro Max or iPhone 13 Pro Max a better value for money in 2026? For most buyers, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the better value since the extra KSh 4,000 to KSh 7,000 buys a meaningfully smoother screen, longer battery life and a better camera. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is better value only if your budget is the deciding factor.

  • iPhone 12 5G in Kenya: Safaricom Compatibility, Charger, and Colours

iPhone 12 5G in Kenya: Safaricom Compatibility, Charger, and Colours

Yes, iPhone 12 5G works on Safaricom’s network in Kenya. That network runs on band n78 (3500 MHz), and the international iPhone 12 model sold across Africa and Europe, the one almost all Ex-UK and refurbished stock in Kenya is built on, supports that exact band. No, the iPhone 12 does not come with a wall charger in the box, Apple removed it from every iPhone starting with this model in 2020, worldwide, not just in Kenya. And yes, it officially comes in six colours, though which ones you can actually buy today depends entirely on what’s in stock, since most units sold here are Ex-UK or refurbished rather than new.

    iphone 12 5g

This guide answers all three questions properly, plus the network problems that come up most often once you’re already using the phone.

iPhone 12 5G compatibility with Safaricom’s network in Kenya

Yes. That 5G network runs on NR band n78 at 3500 MHz, added to its network in August 2024. The international iPhone 12 (model A2403), which is the variant Ex-UK and refurbished stock in Kenya is almost always built on, supports 5G on band n78 among its listed sub-6GHz bands. The two numbers match, which is what actually determines whether a phone can connect to a given 5G network, not the phone’s age or whether “5G” is printed on the box.

    iphone 12 5g

That said, having a compatible phone and actually getting a 5G signal are two different things. As of the most recent figures publicly available, Safaricom’s 5G footprint covers roughly 14% of Kenya’s population across more than 1,100 sites in over 100 towns, spread across all 47 counties but concentrated in and around the larger urban centres. If you’re in central Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, or another major town, 5G is likely reachable. In many rural or smaller-town areas, your iPhone 12 will connect over 4G instead, which it also fully supports, rather than finding a 5G signal that isn’t physically there yet.

To check whether your iPhone 12 is actually using 5G, open Control Centre and look at the signal indicator, or check Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data Options, then Voice & Data, where 5G Auto or 5G On should be selected rather than LTE.

A note on which iPhone 12 variant you’re buying

Apple sold a few regional variants of the iPhone 12 with slightly different band lists: the international model (A2403), a US model (A2172) that adds mmWave 5G on top of the same sub-6 bands, and separate Canada/Japan (A2402) and China (A2404) variants. What matters for a Safaricom connection specifically is sub-6 band n78 support, which the international variant has.

mmWave, the US-only 5G flavour, isn’t deployed by any Kenyan carrier, so its absence on non-US units makes no practical difference here. Since Ex-UK stock is sourced from the UK market, it’s the international variant in virtually all cases, but if you’re ever unsure about a specific unit, iPhone Deals can confirm the model number before you buy.

Common iPhone 12 network problems and how to fix them

Network issues on an iPhone 12 are rarely about the hardware itself, especially on a unit that’s already shown it connects fine, most come down to a handful of fixable settings. In order of how often each one is actually the cause:

Toggle Airplane Mode. Turn Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then off. This forces the phone to re-register with the network and resolves a surprising number of “no service” reports on its own.

Check for a carrier settings update. Go to Settings, then General, then About. If an update is available, a prompt appears automatically, no separate app or download needed. Carrier settings updates fix bugs specific to network behaviour and are pushed periodically by Apple on the carrier’s behalf.

Reset network settings. Go to Settings, then General, then Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Reset, then Reset Network Settings. This clears saved Wi-Fi passwords, cellular settings, and VPN configurations, then rebuilds them from scratch. It’s the single most effective fix for persistent “network not available” or dropped-signal issues, and it’s what most of the iPhone 12 network troubleshooting searches people run are actually looking for.

Reseat or replace the SIM. Physically remove the SIM tray, check the card sits flat and isn’t visibly damaged, and reinsert it. A SIM that’s slightly misaligned causes intermittent service that looks like a network problem but isn’t.

Manually select the network. Go to Settings, then Cellular, then Network Selection, and turn off Automatic. This lets you manually pick Safaricom (or another carrier) rather than relying on automatic selection, which occasionally latches onto a weaker signal.

Confirm the phone isn’t carrier-locked to a network other than the one you’re using. This is different from the device being broken. A carrier-locked iPhone only works with SIM cards from the carrier it was originally sold under, and no software reset fixes that, it requires an official unlock from the original carrier. Most Ex-UK stock sold in Kenya is unlocked before resale, but it’s worth confirming with the seller specifically if you’re buying from somewhere other than an established shop.

If none of these resolve it, the issue is more likely the SIM itself, Safaricom-side coverage in your specific location, or a hardware fault with the phone’s antenna or modem, in which case it’s worth having the device checked rather than continuing to adjust settings.

Does the iPhone 12 come with a charger in the box

    iphone 12 5g

No, and this surprises a lot of first-time iPhone 12 buyers in Kenya who are used to older phones that included one. Apple removed the wall power adapter from the iPhone box starting with the iPhone 12 in 2020, worldwide, citing environmental reasons tied to the number of chargers already in circulation. What Apple’s original retail box included instead was just the phone and a USB-C to Lightning cable, no adapter, no EarPods.

For a brand-new, sealed iPhone 12 bought today, that’s still exactly what you’d get: phone plus cable, no wall adapter. For Ex-UK and refurbished units, which make up most of the iPhone 12 stock sold in Kenya, box contents vary unit to unit. Some arrive in their original retail packaging with the cable still included, some are resold without the original box at all, and what’s actually in the box for any specific unit isn’t something that can be stated as a blanket fact, it depends on that individual phone’s history before it reached the shop.

iPhone Deals’ own warranty policy lists “1 month warranty on chargers and accessories,” which confirms the iPhone 12 charger situation is handled per unit rather than as a guaranteed, unlisted inclusion. If having a charger (cable, wall adapter, or both) included matters to your purchase, the straightforward move is to ask directly before paying, via WhatsApp or in person, rather than assuming either way.

Practically, any existing USB-C power adapter (the kind that ships with recent Android phones, iPads, or MacBooks) charges an iPhone 12 just fine, since the phone itself takes a USB-C to Lightning cable regardless of which adapter is plugged into the other end.

iPhone 12 colours available in Kenya

Apple originally released the iPhone 12 in five colours (Black, White, Red, Green, Blue) and added Purple in April 2021 as a sixth option partway through the phone’s production run. All six remain the complete official colour lineup for this model: Black, White, Red, Green, Blue, and Purple.

    iphone 12 5g

What’s actually available to buy in Kenya right now is a separate question from what Apple originally offered. iPhone Deals lists all six as the model’s available colours, but notes that which ones are currently in stock requires direct enquiry, which is the honest reality of selling Ex-UK and refurbished phones: stock is whatever units have come in, not a made-to-order colour catalogue. A shop can’t guarantee a specific colour is sitting on the shelf the way a new-phone retailer selling sealed stock can.

If you have a specific colour in mind, confirming availability before you commit to an order saves a wasted trip or a WhatsApp back-and-forth after the fact. If colour isn’t a priority, going with whatever’s currently in stock is often the faster and sometimes cheaper route, since less commonly requested colours can sit in inventory longer.

For current pricing across storage options, see our iPhone 12 price guide for Kenya, and if you’re deciding between 64GB and 128GB, that’s covered separately in our storage comparison guide.

    Frequently asked questions

Does the iPhone 12 support 5G in Kenya? Yes. The international iPhone 12 model supports 5G band n78, which is the exact band that network runs on. Actual 5G availability still depends on being in a covered area, since this footprint, while present in all 47 counties, is concentrated around major towns.

Why does my iPhone 12 keep showing “No Service” or losing network? Start with toggling Airplane Mode on and off, then check for a carrier settings update under Settings, General, About. If that doesn’t help, clear the saved network configuration under Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset. Most ongoing network issues resolve with one of these two steps.

How do I reset network settings on an iPhone 12? Go to Settings, then General, then Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Reset, then Reset Network Settings. This clears and rebuilds Wi-Fi, cellular, and VPN settings, and is the most effective fix for persistent connection problems.

Does the iPhone 12 come with a charger? Apple’s original retail box has included only a USB-C to Lightning cable since 2020, no wall adapter, on every iPhone 12 sold anywhere. For Ex-UK and refurbished units resold in Kenya, box contents vary by unit, so it’s worth confirming directly with the seller what’s included before you buy.

What colours does the iPhone 12 come in? Six official colours: Black, White, Red, Green, Blue, and Purple, with Purple added roughly six months after the phone’s original launch. Actual availability in Kenya depends on current stock, since most units sold here are Ex-UK or refurbished rather than new.

Is this phone network-locked to a specific carrier? Not generally for Ex-UK stock resold in Kenya, which is typically unlocked before resale, but a carrier-locked phone only accepts SIM cards from its original carrier regardless of what network settings you adjust. If you’re unsure about a specific unit, ask the seller to confirm its lock status before buying.

How can I tell if my iPhone 12 is actually connected to 5G right now? Check Control Centre for the signal type indicator, or go to Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data Options, then Voice & Data, and confirm 5G Auto or 5G On is selected rather than LTE.

Can I use any USB-C charger to charge an iPhone 12? Yes. The phone takes a USB-C to Lightning cable, so any USB-C wall adapter, the kind that typically ships with Android phones, iPads, or MacBooks, works to charge it, since the adapter itself doesn’t need to be Apple-branded.
