Ex-UK vs Refurbished: What Each Means and Which to Buy

iPhone Deals grades every handset it sells as New, Refurbished, Ex-UK or Used and confirms which one you are getting before you pay, which is the single thing most sellers in this market will not do.

Ex-UK vs refurbished is the question behind most bad phone purchases in Kenya, and the two words do not describe the same thing. Ex-UK tells you where a phone came from. Refurbished tells you what was done to it. A handset can be one, both or neither, and knowing which you are holding changes what you should pay.

What does Ex-UK mean?

An Ex-UK phone is a handset that was originally sold to a customer in the United Kingdom, used there, then exported and brought into Kenya for resale. The phrase describes where the phone came from, not what condition it is in. That distinction is the whole reason people get caught out.

A two-month-old Ex-UK handset in near perfect order and a four-year-old Ex-UK handset with a tired battery are both accurately described as Ex-UK. The label tells you the supply route. It tells you nothing about battery health, screen condition or whether anything has been replaced.

What is a refurbished phone?

A refurbished phone has been tested after its first life, and anything that failed has been repaired or replaced before resale. Refurbished describes a process the phone went through, where Ex-UK describes a journey it took. A phone can be both, one, or neither.

The gap in that process is where most disappointment comes from. Refurbishment is not a regulated term in this market. One seller means a full diagnostic with a new battery fitted. Another means it powered on and the screen looked fine. Both will write refurbished on the listing.

Ex-UK vs refurbished: which is better?

Neither is automatically better, because they answer different questions. Comparing them directly is the mistake. What actually separates two handsets is what was tested and what was replaced.

Question to ask the sellerWhat is the battery health and has anything been replaced? What exactly was refurbished, and by whom?
The honest answer. A well graded Ex-UK phone beats a vaguely refurbished one, and a properly refurbished phone beats an unchecked Ex-UK one. Buy the grading, not the label. Any seller who will not tell you which of the two you are holding, and what was done to it, has answered the question anyway.

Are Ex-UK phones good?

They can be very good, and the economics are real. UK buyers replace phones on short upgrade cycles, so handsets leave that market in better condition and at younger ages than the equivalent local used phone. That is why an Ex-UK iPhone 13 at KSh 43,000 exists at all when the phone was never sold new in Kenya at anything like that price.

What makes them risky is the same thing that makes them cheap. There is no manufacturer standing behind the grading, so the quality of the seller is doing all the work. The phone is only as good as the person who inspected it and the warranty they will put in writing.

The four conditions we grade, and what each means

Every handset on this site is sold under one of four labels, confirmed on your specific unit before you order rather than described in general terms on a listing.

ConditionWhat it means here
NewSealed and unused.
RefurbishedPreviously used, tested, and restored to working order with any failed parts replaced.
Ex-UKA used handset originally sold in the UK market, imported and inspected here.
UsedPreviously owned and sold as is, with its condition described to you before purchase.

Two units of the same model can carry different labels, which is why the grading is done per handset. On iPhones that grading comes with a 6-month warranty covering network, charging, earpiece, microphone and speaker faults plus software problems. Cracked screens and physical damage are excluded, and we would rather say that here than in small print.

What to check before you pay

  1. Ask which of the four conditions this exact handset is, and get the answer in writing.
  2. Ask what was replaced, if anything. A straight answer is a good sign on its own.
  3. Check battery health in Settings, under Battery, then Battery Health and Charging.
  4. Run an IMEI check and confirm the number on the box matches the phone.
  5. Test True Tone, Face ID and the cameras, which are the three things a careless screen swap breaks.
  6. Ask what the warranty covers and what it excludes, then read the exclusions.

If you are checking a phone you have been offered privately rather than in a shop, our guide on spotting a fake iPhone covers the counterfeit side of the same problem.

Questions people ask

What does Ex-UK mean?

Ex-UK means the phone was originally sold to a customer in the United Kingdom, used there, then exported and resold in Kenya. It describes where the handset came from, not what condition it is in.

Between Ex-UK and refurbished, which is better?

Neither, as a rule. Ex-UK describes the phone's origin and refurbished describes work done to it. A well graded Ex-UK phone beats a vaguely refurbished one, and a properly refurbished phone beats an unchecked Ex-UK one. Judge the grading, not the label.

Are Ex-UK phones good?

They can be, because UK upgrade cycles are short, so handsets leave that market relatively young and in decent order. The risk is that no manufacturer stands behind the grading, so quality depends entirely on who inspected the phone and what warranty they will put in writing.

What is a refurbished phone?

One that has been tested after its first life, with anything that failed repaired or replaced before resale. The term is not regulated, so always ask what specifically was refurbished and by whom.

What does Ex-UK iPhone mean?

The same thing it means for any phone. The iPhone was first sold in the UK market, used there, then imported into Kenya. It says nothing by itself about battery health or whether parts have been replaced.

Are refurbished phones good to buy?

Yes, when the seller will tell you what was done and backs it with a warranty. A refurbished phone with a replaced battery and a written warranty is often a better buy than an untouched used one at a similar price.
